Mortgages – a necessary evil and a bit of a dull topic! That is what many people think when you mention you are a mortgage broker. So after 7 years in the finance industry, I wanted to do something different. I wanted people to feel positive about looking for a mortgage and not a terrifying experience or a chore.
That is why I created The Mortgage Dog. I chose the name because I wanted people to know that I am a loyal mortgage broker that can be trusted. But I won’t lick your face!
Why The Mortgage Dog?
I wanted people to feel relaxed about picking up the phone or sending me a message. Being young, I wanted to interact and engage with people of a similar age.
Dogs are such a big part of life these days, especially younger people who see their celebrity idols with them. So I felt that my brand should be as warm as that relationship and something that younger people could relate to.
My passion is to save people money and build a long-term business relationship. To do that, you need face to face meetings and I noticed there was a real need for that personal touch in the North East.

Helping Generation Z
I realised that many younger people who are looking for their first homes are a bit nervous of meeting people, especially as they use so many online apps or comparison sites.
The only way to engage successfully was to use social media ‘doggedly’ to show that The Mortgage Dog is not about ‘men in suits’. I needed to show that The Mortgage Dog is young, down-to-earth and different. I also needed to give away information online to foster a trusted relationship.
I regularly blog about useful items for young buyers. Most recent examples include How to Budget for a Mortgage and First Time Buyers – What You Need to Know!
I’ve also used the platforms to give away tickets to concerts and spa days as they are such a major part of social media.
This approach has seen The Mortgage Dog increase its following and as a result I achieve a lot of positive response that has turned into business.
Don’t just take my word for it
“Daniel not only made our dream of owning our first house a reality, he got us an excellent rate too. Efficient and on the ball. Would recommend to anyone” – Google review.
As well as mortgages, the public face of The Mortgage Dog is one of caring. I regularly volunteer at local dog shelters and am part of a business group called Paws Networking, which raises money for dog shelters. I’ve also recently volunteered to become a director of a local counselling practice helping support veterans, working with them to raise funds for their vital services for north east veterans.
